TEMPORARY PROTECTION STATUS

Includes NIE & Right to Work

Temporary protection can be requested through specific National Police stations as well as in authorized reception centers in Madrid, Barcelona, Malaga and Alicante, see below.

Applicants can go to these points where police officers will take their identification and other elements. Interpreters will be available.

Applicants will be issued a receipt of their request for protection, and will also receive an assigned NIE (foreign national ID number). NIE will provide access to state healthcare and school registration.

The application will be processed and resolved within 24 hours. The decision will include the residence permit and, for adults, a work permit.

The applicant will receive notification of the decision electronically, by post or by personal appearance at police stations or foreign national offices.

EMPADRONAMIENTO

Address Registration

This step is important for the safety of both guests and a host family.

It also provides access to healthcare and education.

NOTE: If you are a renter and want to become a host, you MUST have the express written consent of your landlord agreeing that your guests can get 'padron' in his or her property.

When you have arrived to the city you want to stay in, you will need to follow these steps:

Step 1: Make a 'padron' appointment on the local City Hall 'ayuntamiento' website or by phone if necessary. Take a screenshot of your appointment date. You can also try a 'walk in' visit, as some City Halls will accept you.

Step 2: Take your documents including temporary status, NIE, and passports. If staying with a host family, they must also come and bring their identification documents and home information (rental contract if renting and proof of last payment).

Step 3: Fill out the local form for 'empadronamiento'. You can get this at your local City Hall 'ayuntamiento'.

Step 4: Wait for your 'padron' to go through.

If you need to make an appointment and it is one month away, you may still be able to use the appointment confirmation to access healthcare and school registration. See 'School' and 'Healthcare' for more information.
